Bettye LaVette – Salt of the Earth

Bettye Lavette has a new album covering vintage British pop songs. It’s pretty polished, a bit too smooth. The song that stood out the most was the cover of the Stones’ “Salt Of The Earth”. I wish the album version was closer to this live version. It has more grit, more salt, more earth.

It’s hard to cut through all the the press for the next great new band. This one does cut through.

This was a song that came on the Uncut free CD, Western Skies.

This was the first I was able to download as it was a single release. I’ve heard it the most so far, therefore it’s my current fave.

The NME has become a pretty quick read for me (of course, I’m not its target audience) so I don’t buy it that often. A few weeks back it came with a free CD so I picked it up. This was my fave discovery from the disk.

Nathan Englander – “Fresh Fruit For Young Widows”

It’s officially summer and I have a back log of New Yorker shorts stories, so I’ve taken to starting my day with a coffee and fiction by the pool. It was our kid who brought Englander to my attention. I was living in NYC at the time so I was delighted that one of the stories in his first book was set in my ‘hood, that part of the city that housed “Billy’ Stopless”. “Fresh Fruit” wasn’t really a pool side read, but it is a very sharp war story that will haunt forever.

I porchased the Baby Huey reissue a few years back, played it a lot at the time and then filed it. Our kid had been listening to it recently and returned it to me. Since the CD player was empty, I popped it in for the drive back to town yesterday. The Sun was shining, the traffic was good and Baby Huey was indeed “Mighty Mighty”.

I recently bought one of those “Hard ToFind 45s on CD” collections and this one was particularly chock full of gems. This was one of them. Last winter I was lucky enough to grab the original vinyl album, that was truly “hard to find”.

Graham Annable – Grickle

GrickleAnnable works in the animation industry but frequently creates his own animated shorts and comics. The art is deceptively simple, near cousins to stick figures, but are so lively and full of expression that the characters quickly become real. The book is a compilation of older material and could be a quick read, but I went at it one story at a time so that I wouldn’t have to leave it so soon. Visit his site,  grickle for more art and animations.
